23 March 2013:

An Italian profiling float was successfully deployed in the southern Adriatic Sea on 23 March 2013 from R/V OGS Explora. The float is an Arvor-I instrument manufactured by NKE in France. It cycles between the surface and 700/2000 dbar every 5 days and drifts at the parking depth of 350 dbar. It measures temperature and salinity at each ascent, and transmits data to the Iridium satellite system when at surface where it is localized by GPS. We thank Drs. Franco Coren, Angelo Camerlenghi, Vanessa Cardin and Davide Deponte of OGS for their cooperation.

03 - 04 March 2013:

An Italian profiling float and 6 surface drifters were successfully deployed in the northwestern Ionian Sea on 3-4 March 2013 from R/V OGS Explora. The drifters are SVP designs drogued to a 15-m nominal depth. They measure surface currents and temperature. We thank Drs. Franco Coren, Angelo Camerlenghi, Lorenzo Facchin, Gianpaolo Visnovic and Davide Deponte of OGS for their cooperation. Photo gallery

10 January 2013:

Two Italian profiling floats were deployed in the Southern Ocean on 10 January 2013 from R/V Araon (South Korea) . These floats are Arvor-I instruments manufactured by NKE in France. They cycle between the surface and 2000 dbar every 10 days and drift at the parking depth of 1000 dbar. They measure temperature and salinity at each ascent, and transmit data to the Iridium satellite system when at surface where it is localized by GPS. We thank Drs. Pierpaolo Falco, Giorgio Budillon, Pasquale Castagno and Korean collaborators for their cooperation. Unfortunately, despite all positive tests performed prior to launch, one of the floats stopped functioning just after deployment.

06 January 2013:

An Italian profiling float was deployed in the Ross Sea on 6 January 2013 from R/V Araon (South Korea). This float is an Arvor-I instrument manufactured by NKE in France. It is anchored and cycles between the surface and 1000 dbar every 1 day It measures temperature and salinity at each ascent, and transmits data to the Iridium satellite system when at surface where it is localized by GPS. We thank Drs. Pierpaolo Falco, Giorgio Budillon, Pasquale Castagno and Korean collaborators for their help for this deployment. This deployment in ice-free coastal Ross Sea in winter 2013 is part of the T-Rex experiment. Photo gallery

14 November 2012:

An Italian profiling float was deployed in the northwestern Ionian Sea on 14 November 2012 from R/V OGS Explora. This float is an Arvor-I instrument manufactured by NKE in France. It cycles between the surface and 700/2000 dbar every 5 days and drifts at the parking depth of 350 dbar. It measures temperature and salinity at each ascent, and transmits data to the Iridium satellite system when at surface where it is localized by GPS. We thank Drs. Franco Coren, Angelo Camerlenghi, Fabrizio Zgur and Riccardo Codiglia of OGS for their cooperation. Unfortunately, despite all positive tests performed prior to launch, this float stopped functioning just after deployment.
