OGS is participating in the
MREA07 and
LASIE07 experiments in the Ligurian Sea
during May-June 2007 in collaboration with other Italian and international
institutions and, in particular, with the NATO Undersea Research Centre (
NURC).
As part of MREA07 and LASIE07, OGS is deploying
surface drifters to monitor
the surface currents in both the open sea (deployments in the vicinity of the
ODAS buoy) and the coastal areas (outside the Gulf of La Spezia). All drifters
are of the CODE type. They are equipped with GPS receiver to measure their
location, and their data are telemetered through the Argos satellite system
the cellular phone network (GSM/GPRS) for the open sea and coastal units,
respectively. They are deployed in clusters of 5 units (in a cross-shaped
array with dimension 500 m) to investigate dispersion properties at the sea
surface.
During LASIE07, OGS is operating his
SLOCUM 200 m glider, called TRIESTE-1, to
measure temperature, salinity, oxygen, turbidity and chlorophyll fluorescence
between 200 m depth and the surface, along a transect aligned between the ODAS
buoy and the Gulf of La Spezia.
