*DATASET-NAME: CTD station data collected in the Strait of Otranto (southern opening of the Adriatic Sea) during EU-MAST/MTP OTRANTO project (1994-1995)
*TIME-PERIOD: six seasonal cruise from winter 1994 to spring 1995
*GEOGRAPHIC-COVERAGE: 44-61 CTD stations (5-7 sections) depending from the cruises, through the inlet connecting the Adriatic and the Ionian Seas.
*PROJECT: OTRANTO (Hydrodynamics and Geochemical Fluxes in the Strait of Otranto) in the framework of EU-MAST Mediterranean Targeted Project (MTP), Contract MAS2-CT93-0068.
*PARAMETERS: physical and bio-chemical base-parameters (pressure, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, light transmission, fluorescence) as well as Secchi depth and basic air-sea interface parameters.
*INSTRUMENTS: CTD SeaBird 911 plus, coupled with a 24-bottles Rosette water sampling. The CTD was equipped with Paroscientific digiquartz pressure transducer (0÷10000 psia, 0.015 % F.S.); Oceanographic thermometer (-5 ÷35 °C, ± 0.002 °C); Electrical Conductivity sensor (0±7 Siemens/m, ± 0.001 S/m); Beckman dissolved oxygen sensor (0÷15 ml/l, ± 0.1 ml/l); Sea Tech, Transmissometer, 25 cm water path (0÷100 %, <0.3 % F.S.); Sea Tech, Fluorometer (0-96 µg/l of Chl, ± 3% of reading). Additional SIS reversing thermometer readings, and Guildline bench salinometer for samples analysis were used for CTD data quality control and intercalibration. The transmissometer and fluorometer data were obtained according to manufacture calibration. No intercomparison with other measurements were performed.
*SUMMARY: The CTD data were collected in the framework of the multidisciplinary study of the inlet connecting the Adriatic and the Ionian Seas through the Strait of Otranto with the following objectives: (i) to improve the knowledge of the hydrodynamics of the strait at synoptic, seasonal and interannual time scales; (ii) to estimate the exchanges of waters and associated material between the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, and to evaluate their variability; (iii) to increase the understanding of the influence of the strait upon the adjacent water bodies; (iv) to provide a consistent data set both for validation of the models and for the assessment of complementary programmes. Six seasonal hydrological surveys with CTD casts and water sampling for the determination of nutrients and dissolved/particulate elements were conducted together with marine currents and sediment fluxes measurements across a latitudinal section in the Otranto Strait.
The CTD stations were occupied during six seasonal cruises. The cruises calendar was as follows:

During the Otranto 3 and 6 additional stations were performed across section in the Southern Adiatic. The Otranto 6 (61 stations) was conducted with two ships contemporary at sea. Additional intercalibration stations were included concurrently with the two ships.
The data set comprises over 294 vertical profiles and includes data supplied by three institutions:
- Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale – OGS, Department of Oceanology and Environmental Geophysics, Trieste, Italy (Otranto 1, 3 and 6)
- National Centre for Marine Research, Department of Physical Oceanography, Athens, Greece (Otranto 2, 4 and 5)
- NATO SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, La Spezia, Italy (Otranto 6)
The original CTD data were controlled, analysed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal quality control responsibility. The high resolution vertical profiles of each station were averaged over 1 dbar pressure interval. The salinity has been computed according to the practical salinity scale of 1978. The averaged data are stored as depth series per station, per cruise and ship (institution).
