Databases Inventory (EDMED Forms)

*DATASET-NAME: CTD station data collected in Adriatic open waters during ASCOP project (1979-84, 1989-91)

*START-YEAR:1979

*END-YEAR:1991

*TIME-PERIOD: from 1979 to 1984 (Phase 1), from 1989 to 1991 (Phase 2)

*GEOGRAPHIC-COVERAGE: 64 CTD stations (8 transects) covering the region of international waters in the Northern and Middle Adriatic sea up to transect Gargano-Split as part of the standard grid stations of the ASCOP Monitoring Program. Additional finer grid of 60 stations was located off the mouths of the Po.

*PROJECT: ASCOP, Adriatic Scientific Cooperation Program in the framework of Italian/Yugoslav Multidisciplinary Program for the Protection of the Adriatic Sea and Coastal Regions from Pollution.

*PARAMETERS: physical base-parameters (pressure, temperature, salinity, secchi depth) as well as basic air-sea interface parameters.

*INSTRUMENTS: CTD Neil Brown Mark IIIB, STD Bisset Berman 9006, secchi disc, reversing thermometer, reversing bottle and bench salinometer for samples analysis and CTD/STD data intercalibration.

*SUMMARY: The CTD data were collected in the framework of the multidisciplinary monitoring program of the Adriatic Sea scheduled to determine the current state of the ecosystem and pollution in relation to its basic hydrological features and dynamics.
The original CTD/STD data were controlled, analysed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal quality control responsibility. Nevertheless before the data set has been considered as part of the database it has been submitted to a pre-processing procedure and the preliminary data products were submitted to the group of experts charged of final data validation and reporting.
The high resolution vertical profiles of each station were averaged over 1 dbar pressure interval. The salinity has been computed according to the practical salinity scale of 1978.The averaged data are stored as depth series per station, per cruise and ship (institution).
The CTD stations were occupied during 9 seasonal cruises. Additional intercalibration stations were carried out concurrently with different ships. 3 hydrographic surveys were conducted in summer (1983, 1984, 1991); 3 in autumn (1979, 1989, 1990); 2 in spring (1983, 1990); 1 cruise in late winter 1991. The autumn cruise in 1979 covered only the Northern Adriatic, the other cruises covered the Northern, Middle and Southern Adriatic Sea. 2 cruises (spring 1990 and late winter 1991) were concerned with the special Dynamic Experiment in the Northern Adriatic Sea (NADEX).
The data set comprises over 870 vertical profiles and includes data supplied by 3 Italian institutions:
- CNR, Istituto di Biologia del Mare, Venezia;
- CNR, Istituto di Ricerche sulla Pesca Marittima, Ancona;
- Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale OGS, Sgonico (Trieste)
