ADRICOSM-STAR PROJECT

The project aims at the development and partial implementation of an integrated coastal area and river and urban waters management system that considers both observational and modelling components.

The area of investigation is the Bojana river Delta and the whole Montenegro Adriatic coast: the project considers transboundary water issues, such as the Bojana river that is managed by both Montenegro and Albania, and the Montenegro coastal area which is naturally affected by Albanian marine waters. The project develops innovative components such as studies of climate change impacts on the water resources and sediment transport. This is a new element of the ADRICOSM Partnership that will be implemented for the first time in this project contributing to the general development of tools and concepts for the integrated management of the Adriatic coastal areas.

The project has a duration of three years and involves 19 public and private partners from Italy, Montenegro, Serbia and Albania.

The coordinating Institution is the Centro Euro-Mediterraneo per i Cambiamenti Climatici and the scientific coordinator is Prof. Nadia Pinardi of INGV and University of Bologna.

The project has a duration of 3 years starting from March 2007.

OGS is involved in ADRICOSM-STAR in:
  • WP2 Data collection program:
The aim is to carry out process oriented data collection experiments to collect the relevant data sets for model validation and calibration in WP4 and prepare for the monitoring phase of WP3.
After the analysis of the historical data sets is done, new observations will be collected to fill in the gaps and to gather relevant new observations for model validation/calibration. This phase is a precursor phase for the design of the permanent real time monitoring system to be implemented in WP3. The new instruments will be procured and used for the first time in the process oriented studies of this workpackage and then used for the long term monitoring. The satellite and VOS monitoring systems will be upgraded in this workpackage.

The OGS satellite products are used to study some surface water quality parameters such as the turbidity and the temperature. Images obtained from the processing of the AVHRR data will contribute to describe the diurnal spatial and temporal evolution of the above mentioned marine factors.
  • WP7 Information Management System:
This WorkPackage aims to develop a data base structure for historical data, data catalog and Web network, data policy and dissemination protocols for the real time and delayed mode observational and model data ADRICOSM STAR
